KAMLOOPS — Add another award to the list for Logan Stankoven.

On Tuesday night (June 26), the budding hockey star was presented with the Dayna Brons Honourary Award by Hockey Gives Blood. The award is named in honour of the Humboldt Broncos athletic therapist who died from injuries she suffered in the tragic bus crash in the spring of 2018.

“It was a really tragic day and it broke news all over the world,” Stankoven recalls. “It’s really nice that they can make an award like this for Dayna and the Humboldt Broncos team.”

That crash, which took place five years ago, was one of the factors that led Stu Middleton to co-found Hockey Gives Blood. Middleton, who also played junior hockey, appreciates the time and effort that Stankoven has put in as a player ambassador for the organization.

“His platform is huge and he’s using it in a positive way to help save lives in Canada,” Middleton says. “Everything he’s doing we appreciate, and to be able to honour him locally, here in Kamloops, is really special.”

The award is given to someone in the hockey community who is deemed to have made a significant contribution toward patients who need blood products in Canada.

Since the age of 15, Stankoven has been a player-ambassador for Hockey Gives Blood. This season, he and the Blazers helped raise over $40,000 for Canadian Blood Services through a charity bobblehead night.

“You never know when you might need blood, down the road,” Stankoven says. “It’s important that when people are in need you can give back to them and help them out in any way you can.”

The need for blood and blood products in Canada continues to outpace the rate at which people donate.

“We are at our lowest percentage of donor base in over a decade,” Niki Randall, with Canadian Blood Services explains. “Right now, there’s only two per cent of eligible donors donating blood, and we have 150,000 open appointments we need to fill before the end of summer.”

Canadian Blood Services is hosting some blood donor clinics this summer in Kamloops to help fill those appointments and the need for blood products.

Go onto blood.ca or the Give Blood app. Or you can call 1-888-2-DONATE,” Randall explains. “Book an appointment, and make sure you bring your government ID if it’s your first time donating. Try to hydrate a little bit before, have a salty snack, and plan to be there for about an hour.”
