Cool, wet weather leads to fewer wildfires and low danger rating throughout Kamloops Fire Centre

KAMLOOPS — Thanks to favourable conditions throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre, there is limited wildfire activity despite some lightning rolling through the region over the weekend.

According to Kamloops Fire Information Officer Melanie Bibeau, there were more than 900 lightning strikes throughout the fire centre from Friday night (June 23) through Monday morning.

Despite those numbers, Bibeau says new fire starts in the area were few in number.

“The Kamloops Fire Centre has seen two new fires in the last seven days. Of these two new starts, one of them is already out,” Bibeau says. “The other one, being a new start in the last 24 hours, we do have crews who are responding to it today.”

The current fire danger rating in the Kamloops Fire Centre falls into the low-to-moderate range. That’s thanks to some cooler, rainy weather over the past few weeks.

“While there was some lightning occurrence because it came with that precipitation and it did come with those good overnight recoveries, we didn’t see too many new starts as of yet,” Bibeau explains. “We may see more in the coming days from holdover fires.”
