‘High likelihood for extended periods of drought,: Kamloops Council to receive report on drought preparations

KAMLOOPS — This week Kamloops City Council receive a report from Utilities Manager Greg Wightman regarding the city’s preparations for possible draught conditions.

“Forecasts for the 2023 drought season are indicating a high likelihood for extended periods of drought. To prepare for this possibility, staff have formed a cross-departmental Drought Response Team. This team will participate on the Province’s Thompson Okanagan Regional Drought Response,” stated Wightman in his report to council.

Locally Wightman stated their concerns centre around protecting the water supply for critical uses and protecting the water supply for the fish-bearing streams and rivers.

“Analysis of previous droughts indicates that there are three major factors typically involved with drought occurrence—low winter snow accumulations, dry spring weather in May and June, and dry summer weather throughout July and August. The hot and dry spring of 2023 and low snowpack have elevated the concern for drought,” continues the report.
