KAMLOOPS — A smoky skies bulletin is in effect for Kamloops, the North Thompson and the Cariboo.

In a news release issued Wednesday (June 14), the B.C. government says wildfire smoke is tracking south through central and eastern B.C. over the next 24 to 48 hours.

“There is a cold front that passed over the province. So, it travelled from the west to the east, and what that essentially did was open up the door for all the fire smoke that is up in the northeastern part of the province and probably some of the Alberta fires. And it essentially has drawn right down through the central and some of the eastern parts of the province. It has reached Kamloops this morning, actually a bit earlier than expected and we are seeing the measured concentration a bit higher than the models has predicted as well,” said Gail Roth, Air Quality Meteorologist with Environment Canada.

The province warns that wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health, even at low concentrations. People with pre-existing health conditions and respiratory infections such as COVID-19, along with older adults, pregnant women and infants, children, and sensitive individuals, are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.

Residents are encouraged to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke. can take action to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke. Smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour.

“Wildfire smoke in the long-term is very difficult to forecast. But we are expecting to see likely some improvements through overnight. So, in the near term we are expecting this will be like a day or two type of event for Kamloops. What happens in the long-term might be a bit of a different story but we aren’t looking at previous season where fires were in closer proximity to Kamloops,” added Roth.
