UPDATE (12:00 p.m.): A severe thunderstorm watch is now in effect for the Kamloops and Merritt area.

Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain in the South Thompson and Nicola regions.

The weather agency warns that strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS — Kamloops and area is getting a stronger taste of “Junuary” weather starting Tuesday (June 13) afternoon.

In a special weather statement online, Environment Canada says rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected for the North and South Thompson regions from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday. The 100 Mile, Cariboo, Nicola and Shuswap regions are also blanketed by the statement.

The weather agency forecasts rainfall amounts from 15 to 25 millimetres and wind gusts of up to 60 km/h. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop throughout the day, followed up by gusty winds from a cold front moving across B.C. Tuesday.
