COLLINS: Pride Month is a necessary event to show how intolerant we are

Jun 11, 2023 | 5:30 AM

THIS IS PRIDE MONTH. Supposedly a time to mark progress in the battle to give members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community a road to a safer, caring and more inclusive lifestyle, in a world that has become more tolerant

And it doesn’t take much to see that instead of making progress, we are going in the opposite direction. More than ever, those who are struggling with their sexuality are struggling against increased hatred.

The 2SLGBTQI+ community, like the Jews, Aboriginal and black communities are facing persecution reminiscent of bygone centuries. Laws against homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and transgender people have become more prevalent than ever.

I’m tired of religious zealots who try to use their religious beliefs as an excuse to violently oppose gay rights. I’m not getting into that debate here, but I believe the intolerant people who thrive on this misguided philosophy really don’t understand their faith.

Some Pride events across the country have had to be cancelled because of the high cost of insurance, necessary because of threats against the community. Kamloops has a number of events this month, including a couple this weekend. I hope people will attend, ask questions, and listen.

And while so many groups profess tolerance and inclusion, I hope some of them at least will come to realize that faith and hope should be part of everyone’s lives and that we should remember we all should be striving to understand what others are going through as opposed to taking an arbitrary stand based on fear and intimidation.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
