KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is conducting a modified response to an active wildfire within Wells Gray Provincial Park. As of Friday, the Murtle Lake wildfire was estimated to be 1270 hectares and classified as out of control.

The Murtle Lake area which includes the access road, parking lot and trails have now been closed.

“The fire has the potential to threaten the only access and egress to Murtle Lake within Wells Gray Provincial Park. In the interest of public safety, BC Parks has proactively closed this area and urges the public to abide by the Murtle Lake closure and any signage in the area,” reads a release from BCWS.

While the Murtle Lake area of the park is closed, the public is still able to visit the majority of Wells Gray Park that remains unaffected by this wildfire.
