Kamloops RCMP quarterly report shows increase in property crime

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP provided their first quarter report to city council Tuesday (June 6) morning, showing an 8 per cent increase in overall files from pre-pandemic levels. Supt. Jeff Pelley noted the increases come primarily in the crimes against property section, with a small increase in crimes against persons.

In his report, Pelley focused on prolific offenders. In specific, he mentioned 16 offenders, eight of which are currently in custody.

“We have had a number of repeat offenders where our front-line officers and our crime reduction unit have been very engaged on a proactive enforcement plan. We continue to focus on certain offenders and hold them accountable to the judiciary and it resulted in some of these offenders being remanded into custody,” said Pelley.

Despite the recent changes to bail reform and a hyper-focus on repeat offenders from all levels of government in Canada, the Kamloops commander noted more work needs to be done to address the issue of prolific offenders in the community.

“I think there is a lot more work to be done. We’ve had challenges of certain individuals being released, and constantly targeting individuals or offenders. We have more of a capacity to do that with some our teams and resources now. We are clearly demonstrating the need to be proactive on these repeat offender that are not only targeting Kamloops but throughout the region,” added Pelley.

City council questioned the superintendent on the work of Car 40 in Kamloops. Pelley stated they are constantly reviewing the current model which sees the car staffed with an officer and nurse for 12 hours per day.

“It’s really a balance of what the needs are and the resources, and where the demand is. It’s constantly being reassessed. I certainly would like to explore expanding that. And we continue to focus on what those needs are and work with our partners to see if there could be a collaborative approach and what those specific demands are,” said Pelley.
