Grass fire sparks on Tk’emlups reserve

TK’EMLUPS — UPDATE (2:45 p.m.): Just before 12:00 p.m. on Monday (June 5), Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were called out to quick moving grass fire on the Tk’emlups reserve. The blaze ignited just off of the Halston Bridge, burning through a number of properties and close to a pair of structures.

Kamloops Fire Rescue responded to the call with three bush trucks, an engine and two water tenders. Firefighters also received support from the band, Unimog and the B.C. Wildfire Service.

“We have a great relationship with everybody in the community. (Tk’emlups) showed up here with a water tender, Unimog, ready to help out wherever needed. And we have been really happy putting them to work laying wet lines for us. BC Wildfire is just arriving on scene as well, and we are going to have them work with some wet lines, guard securing, just make sure the fire is nice and tight,” said KFR Deputy Chief Ryan Cail.

Thankfully no structures were lost in the fire, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Cail noted that another close call is evidence of how dry conditions are in the community.

“Originally when crews got on scene, they were quite shocked how quick it was travelling already. What looks like green-up is really not much of a green-up this year and we are going to be experiencing some really hot, dry and volatile conditions, especially coming into this next week,” added Cail.
