Lower Nicola band holds walk in support of MMIW2S

LOWER NICOLA, B.C. — The Lower Nicola Indian Band (LNIB) put on a walk today (May 30) in support and to raise awareness for the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Two Spirited (MMIW2S).

Carol Basil, one of the organizers of the walk, said the issue is not going away and we need to keep supporting all of those affected.

“The walk is to remember the murdered and the missing, not only the women, but the girls, the two spirited, the men, and the boys. It’s not just focused on women anymore.”

While not being able to hold a walk of this magnitude everyday to raise awareness, Basil adds several other ways people can show their support on a day to day basis.

“We do workshops, we do pins, we do skirts, earrings, and even making a sign helps, it’s as simple as that.”

About 80 people joined for the walk from the Shulus Hall to the Shulus Arbor, including two classes from the Lower Nicola Indian Band School.

“I just wanted to acknowledge everybody that came out and supported us, it was a really good day,” added Basil.
