Dropped iPhone activates crash detection feature, sends Chase RCMP scurrying to Sorrento

CHASE, B.C. — RCMP in Chase have the latest example of cutting-edge technology meant to keep people safe not exactly doing its job.
On Victoria Day Monday (May 22) at about 5:45 p.m., RCMP received an automated crash notification from an iPhone. The notification provided a location of the “crash” in Sorrento.
RCMP responded and patrolled the area of the incident but couldn’t find a collision.
When police contacted the owner of the iPhone, she explained the phone had been dropped onto a concrete surface before falling into Shuswap Lake. The iPhone crash detection feature had interpreted this mishap as a motor vehicle collision and alerted emergency services.
