City of Kamloops expanding access to free menstrual products in city facilities

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops committed to offer more free menstrual products in washrooms for public and staff use as part of United Way B.C.’s Period Promise campaign.

In a news release, the City says its policy comes in the lead-up to International Menstrual Hygiene Day on Sunday (May 28).

Over the past four months, the City says it held a pilot study offering free menstrual products some facilities such as the Tournament Capital Centre. Now, it plans to provide free menstrual products to all women’s and gender-neutral washrooms at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre and all city arenas and pools.

According to those who received free menstrual products during the pilot and participated in the City’s anonymous survey, the majority reported feeling less stigma, more confidence expressing their needs for period products, and an ability to better participate in activities.

“Half of everybody who menstruates in B.C. – women, girls, nonbinary people and trans folks – have struggled to buy product at some point in their life,” Chelsea Ingram, United Way B.C.’s campaign manager says. “Financial pressures because of the lingering impacts of COVID, and rising costs from inflation, have continued to increase vulnerability. When people have access to menstrual products, it improves their health and well-being, gives back dignity, and makes it possible for them to stay engaged in their community.”
