Flair Airlines to debut Kamloops-to-Edmonton flight next month

KAMLOOPS — Starting next month, Kamloops residents will be able to fly to Edmonton without a connecting flight in Vancouver or Calgary. Flair Airlines will begin to service the route starting on June 18. The low-cost airline will fly the route twice per week on Sundays and Wednesday.

A new route and a discounted fare are coming to the Kamloops Airport. Flair Airlines are selling tickets for their brand new YKA-to-Edmonton route for $29, one-way.

“When you keep fares low you can stimulate new demand. We fly 189-seat, 737 aircraft. That allows us to bring a lot of seats into the market,” said Flair VP Eric Tanner. “We really don’t need to charge that much per seat to be a profitable carrier.”

The flight will allow Kamloops and Edmonton residents a cheap option to explore each other’s cities.

“It presents a great opportunity for both mid-week and long weekend getaways here in Kamloops,” said Lisa White, Tourism Kamloops. “For us it’s such a great target audience for leisure travel, meeting travel, corporate travel. A great opportunity for people to come visit Kamloops and see what we have to offer.”

Airport manager Ed Ratuski noted that getting a direct flight to Edmonton was always the first step for the facility. Conversations are ongoing with all carriers to bring even more options to Kamloops in the future.

“We have been quite open about it for Toronto and Victoria service as well. Those are our key destinations in terms of what the data shows where it could support non-stop service,” said Ratuski.

Tanner did say that Flair is always open to adding new routes and didn’t rule out the possibility in Kamloops but added they are focused on on-boarding the new Edmonton connection first.

“That’s the big challenge and opportunity. We are certainly excited about the bookings we’ve seen so far, we are expecting a very robust summer just across our network. But, I think the big task for a route like Edmonton-Kamloops is spreading the word. We know there is a demand for it, we just know that people might not know it exists yet,” said Tanner.
