United Way raising awareness around period poverty by collecting menstrual items

KAMLOOPS– The United Way is once again collecting menstrual products for its annual Period Promise initiative.

The campaign aims to raise awareness around period poverty, end the stigma around menstruating and provide products to those who need them in the community.

“If you don’t have product available to you when you need it, you are missing out on taking your kid to soccer or going to the gym or being able to stay at work, going to the grocery store,” Chelsea Ingram, United Way B.C.’s campaign manager for Thompson Nicola Cariboo told CFJC Today. “You are trapped at home and that can be very isolating.”

According to Ingram, menstrual products are one of the most asked-for products from social agencies, but the least likely donated.

Until June 13, United Way will be collecting menstrual products to be distributed to local agencies. Last year the local branch reported collecting 26,000 products. This year they hope to reach 40,000 by the end of the campaign.

“We had so many people within the community and workplaces step up to support this campaign, more than ever before,” Ingram said.

Monetary and product donations can be dropped off at the United Way office on the North Shore, located at 286 Tranquille Rd, and at participating drop-off locations around the city.

The Kamloops branch will be holding a public event to celebrate the local campaign June 7. For more information on the Period Promise campaign, click here.
