COLLINS: Council’s Code of Conduct a sign of sad times

May 19, 2023 | 5:00 AM

CODES OF CONDUCT are a part of our everyday life. They give us guidelines for life. At least that’s the idea.

Religions have had codes of conduct for centuries. The Ten Commandments are a Code of Conduct. The teachings of Jesus and other religious leaders are a code of conduct. The laws of our land are codes of conduct by which we are expected to live our lives by in a democratic society. Dictators like Vladimir Putin have a code of conduct.

Social agencies, unions, and the list goes on, have regulations and rules that guide them. Again, a code of conduct or ways to live within these boundaries. Every day, we are expected to live by these “Codes”.

So a Code of Conduct for City Council doesn’t necessarily seem to be a big deal. The School District has a very good one. So why not Council?

Well, it’s this way. When you have to put rules in place to tell nine people not to be jerks when dealing with each other, it’s not a positive watershed moment. Especially when the Code is spawned by the failure of Council and the Mayor to be civil to each other.

And so every time someone feels slighted, you and I are going to have to pay for an investigator to determine the facts. The results of that investigation could mean various forms of censorship for a Councillor or Mayor. In other words, a lawsuit waiting to happen. Which, again, you and I will foot the bill for.

The Code may be necessary, but to me, it’s a sad day when, after only six months of working together (or not), 9 people have had to resort to needing a Code of Conduct so they can be civil to each other.

I’m Doug Collins, and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
