Long live the May Long weekend in Kamloops

Whether you’re staying in town or hitting the road this weekend, there are plenty of events to keep you busy, according to Tourism Kamloops.

“There always are on May Long weekend, and it’s fantastic,” Lisa White, Director of Community Development and Engagement with Toursim Kamloops says. “The KYSA Slurpee Cup is happening, and the BC Lions Fanfest at Hillside Stadium is happening this weekend. Of course, our farmer’s market is in full swing, every Saturday and Wednesday right now. We have all our regular fantastic activities that people love to embrace and enjoy, as well, like biking and hiking and golf, and experiencing our lakes, fishing.”

While the province is blanketed with smoke right now, the forecast is things should improve ahead of the weekend. That should mean a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to enjoy what the city has to offer.

“It’s huge for all our attractions, our accommodation partners and restaurants. It is such a great boost, and it sets sort of the tone and the feeling for what the summer is going to present,” said White. “It gives everyone a chance to get their feet wet, and get ready for what the summer is going to bring.”

Folks in Kamloops seem to have a wide variety of plans.

“Maybe golf a bit, or whatever,” one gentleman says.

“Well, I live out on the Shuswap, so I’ll probably be partying next door at the provincial park,” one lady says.

“I work over at [a local brewery] and we’re actually doing a long weekend BBQ,” a young fellow says.

“I’m playing cricket in Kamloops, so that’ll be great,” one batsman explains. “Sunshine is there, a team is travelling from Surrey. We’re going to have a good game of cricket that’s like six hours long.”

“Yes, I’m going to Whistler,” another young lady explains.

And hopefully, the smoke that’s been blanketing the city for the past couple of days shouldn’t be an issue come the weekend.
