Smoky skies for Cariboo communities due to northern wildfires

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — An air quality advisory was issued for large stretches of central and northeastern B.C., including the Cariboo.

In a news release late Tuesday (May 16) afternoon, the Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) says communities such as 100 Mile House, Quesnel and Williams Lake will see smoky skies for 24 to 72 hours due to wildfire smoke.

CFC says smoke is drifting from wildfires north of Fort St. John, including the Donnie Creek, Red Creek and Stoddart Creek wildfires.

As of Wednesday morning, the BC Wildfire Service reports Donnie Creek wildfire at 43,270 hectares, the Red Creek wildfire at 2,947 hectares and the Stoddart Creek wildfire at 21,455 hectares.

In an online weather statement, Environment Canada says wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health, even at low concentrations. The weather agency says people with lung disease or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.

Residents are encouraged to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke. can take action to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke.
