Air quality advisory in effect as Kamloops area is blanketed in wildfire smoke
KAMLOOPS — The relentless wildfires wreaking havoc in Northern BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan have now cast their smoky shadow over Kamloops, as a thick curtain of smoke descends upon the region. The resulting surge in air pollution has propelled air quality levels to dangerous heights, prompting concerns among residents and authorities alike.
According to Armel Castellan, a Preparedness Meteorologist at Environment Canada, the winds have recently shifted, carrying smoke from the wildfires in the northern parts of the western provinces toward Kamloops. This phenomenon has resulted in a significant decline in air quality, posing a risk to the health and well-being of the local population.
“We do see the air quality being poor at least for the Thompson-Nicola region for a 24-to-36 hour period before possibly witnessing a slight shift in southerly winds,” Castellan explains. “This shift may help redirect some of the poor air northward, where it originated.”
