KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) and the local RCMP detachment are teaming up to warn residents after responding to a series of suspicious fires overnight.

According to a news release, the first report came in at 10:45 p.m. Monday (May 15). A dumpster in the alley behind the 400-block of Lansdowne Street was deliberately set ablaze.

Over the next hour, crews snuffed four more suspicious fires in alleyways behind Victoria Street. One of the fires was very close to spreading to a nearby building.

At about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, RCMP officers were called to the 700-block of Sydney Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing a man trying to light grass on fire. The man took off before officers arrived.

Description:

  • White
  • About 5’8″
  • Wearing a white muscle shirt and white pants

“The timing and proximity of multiple dumpster fires last night is definitely suspicious and is not believed to be an individual or random event,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn. “Along with our frontline officers, the General Investigations Support Team is also assisting fire investigators in attempting to identify a suspect and address this very serious safety concern.”

“We always encourage businesses to lock their dumpsters and to move them away from their building as much as they possibly can,” added KFR Duty Chief Scott Karpiak. “We realize space is at a premium, but believe that creating some distance between a dumpster and a building can be effective in helping to prevent fire spread through radiant heat or direct flame impingement.”

Anyone who may have surveillance cameras in the area of where the fires were set is asked to review their footage to see if they captured anything that could help investigators.

Evelyn adds those who see suspicious vehicles, people or happenings to report them to the local detachment.
