KAMLOOPS — In a little under a month, the Hoops in the Loops 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take over two blocks of Victoria Street in downtown Kamloops. Tuesday (May 16), CFJC Today spoke with organizers as they continue to try and grow the event, with all the proceeds going to KidsSport Kamloops.

The event features male and female divisions from elementary school, right up to competitive men’s and women’s categories playing for cash prizes. Tournament founder Sean Garvey says, after the success of last year’s event, he’s focused on building up the women’s side of the tournament.

“I really, really want to make sure this event is featuring both men’s and women’s [divisions], so that’s why we’re doing our very first cash women’s tournament, as well,” Garvey explains. “We’re giving away as much money in the women’s tourney as in the men’s. We just really want to focus on everyone this year.”

Last year, the event drew more than 60 teams across all divisions, despite some less-than-ideal weather on Sunday. This year, team registrations are up from where they were last year, and the hope is to draw more teams out in 2023.

“The level of play was just so good. Division 1 athletes, ex-college guys, and TRU had a squad in. It was a really high level of play,” Garvey says. “It’s here for everybody. If you want to watch a high level of hoops, great. If you want a family atmosphere, it kind of covers both. It was a really great event last year, and I’m hoping we take it to another level this year.”

The Hoops in the Loops 3-on-3 basketball tournament takes place June 10 and 11 in the 300- and 400-blocks of Victoria Street. For more information, you can visit www.hoopsintheloops.com.
