KAMLOOPS — A man is in custody and facing charges after a weapons investigation led to a high-visibility takedown in Sun Rivers Sunday evening (May 14).

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says officers were called to the 1600-block of Centennial Drive in Brocklehurst at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday for a vehicle fire.

Evelyn says investigators soon realized they needed to launch a firearms investigation.

“Thanks to the quick response of the frontline officers who attended the scene and conducted the initial investigation, police were able to identify a suspect, establish his location on Talasa Way, and obtain important information for risk assessment,” said Evelyn. “Due to the reported presence of firearms and other details of the investigation, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team attended; the apartment was contained, and surrounding units were evacuated.”

The suspect eventually left the apartment building and was arrested.

A Kamloops man is charged with possessing weapons (.22 semi-automatic rifle, 858 semi-automatic rifle, shotgun) while prohibited, and three counts of using, carrying or transporting guns in a careless manner. He faces six charges in total and is being held until his first court appearance.

Investigators are still looking into the vehicle fire.

Anyone with further information or evidence, including video footage, is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to 2023-16819.
