HUNTER: Nursing our appreciation back to health
NATIONAL NURSING WEEK takes place from Monday, May 8 to Sunday, May 12 – Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
This year’s theme is ‘Our Nurses. Our Future.’ According to the Canadian Nurses Association website, the theme “showcases the many roles nurses play in a patient’s healthcare journey. The pandemic brought to light the courage and commitment nurses work under every day and showed the important role nurses play in the community.”
As part of National Nursing Week, a group of nursing associations from across Canada joined forces to launch a social media campaign aimed at the public and gives them a chance to tell a nurse or a group of nurses how much they are appreciated for their work using the hashtag #HeyNurse.
I recently found myself in the emergency room with what turned out to be an upper respiratory infection which was making it difficult to breathe. I had the best care from the nurses. From the intake desk to the attending nurse, I felt supported and cared about, even though it was 11:00 p.m. on a Saturday night. I didn’t have the same experience with the doctor on call that night, who drove me to tears. I was thankful for the compassion of the nurse.
