KAMLOOPS — School District 73 Kamloops-Thompson will be hosting the first annual indigenous student leadership summit later this month.

The event will bring together 10 school districts from around the Interior.

The 2023 Indigenous Student Leadership Summit consists of secondary school Indigenous student leaders from the ten BC School Districts who make up the Okanagan Mainline Regional Indigenous Education (OMRIE) Council. Up to ten students from each of the OMRIE districts will be attending the Summit hosted in Kamloops, BC on May 16, 2023, at Thompson Rivers University.

The Okanagan Mainline Regional Indigenous Education Council (OMRIE) consists of representatives from ten school districts. The OMRIE Council meets throughout the year to share initiatives that are improving results for Aboriginal learners and enhancing students’ sense of belonging in our collective pursuit for equity.

“The goal is to expose student leaders to other district and Indigenous student perspectives and allow them the opportunity to share their ideas with the adults (change makers) in their education systems,” reads a release from SD73 Superintendent Rhonda Nixon.

These students provided relevant topics to be investigated, are currently preparing their thoughts and opinions, to discuss the following topics during the 2023 Summit:

* Anti-Indigenous Racism

* Indigenous Culture in Schools

* Indigenous Student Health and Well-Being
