Kamloops annual turtle race kicks off at Riverside Park
KAMLOOPS — Thousands of toy snappers floated down the South Thompson River on Sunday (May 7th) for the annual VW Turtle Race, which raised funds for the Kamloops Brain Injury Society.
Although there is prize money involved for podium finishes, the majority of the proceeds go to a good cause. This year’s event saw just shy of $25,000 in prizes up for grabs.
Volkswagen has sponsored the event each year since the idea came into fruition, and has been its title sponsor for more than 20 years.
The races began as the floaties were released into the river at the Railway Bridge, where they floated along the water and crossed the finish line at the pier. Each floatie had a unique number, and the first ones to cross the finish line won cash prizes.
