COLLINS: I admit it — I’m a royalist

May 7, 2023 | 6:30 AM

GIVEN MY KNOWLEDGE OF BRITISH HISTORY and my beliefs about the harm the monarchy has caused over centuries, I shouldn’t want the monarchy to continue. But I watched the coronation ceremony yesterday, and I was impressed with Charles. I believe he will be a good king with a stabilizing influence, and his efforts to try and create a better world are admirable.

Eventually, William and Kate will be king and queen, and they will bring an even greater strength.

Of course, the monarchy in Britain hasn’t always been as benevolent. Many of my forbears were of Scottish and Irish descent, and we know of all the conflicts they had with the English.

There were a number of terribly rotten kings and queens.

The Doctrine of Discovery allowed explorers to come in and tramp on the rights of our First Nations. First Nations are still fighting to reacquire those rights.

Many suggest the British monarchy is no longer relevant. Australia and New Zealand are looking at republics, Barbados has already renounced the monarchy and commonwealth, a majority of Canadians seem to think it’s time for change, and even in Britain there’s a growing discontent.

So I may be in the minority, but I will stand by my conviction that there is a place for the monarch as our head.

Compared with the options, I don’t know if there is a choice. Even if I am a descendant of the family of Braveheart, William Wallace. But you can’t tell anyone that.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
