Blazers pushed to brink of elimination, drop game five to Thunderbirds 8-4

KAMLOOPS — For the first time in their 2023 Western Hockey League (WHL) playoff run, the Kamloops Blazers are on the brink of elimination.

The Blazers dropped game four of the WHL Western Conference Finals 8-4 from Sandman Centre Thursday (May 4), putting them a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series.

The Blazers fell behind 2-0 in the first period before Matthew Seminoff tipped in a goal on the power play to make it 2-1. But instead of the Blazers exiting the first down one, they were down two again after a turnover to Thunderbirds star Dylan Guenther along the wall led to a goal with two seconds remaining.

It would be the Olen Zellweger show in the second period as the Blazers’ star defenceman scored twice – one in tight short side and another from a sharp angle slap shot – to make it 3-3.

However, a tie game would be as close as the Blazers would get. Kyle Crnkovic restored the Thunderbirds’ lead shortly after exiting the second period, then the Thunderbirds scored two goals early in the third period en route to the 8-4 win.

Next up for the Blazers is game five Saturday from Kent, Wash.

If needed, game six would be Monday from Sandman Centre.
