Kamloops RCMP report surge in phone scam attempts this week
KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are reporting an uptick in a familiar phone scam.
According to detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn, during the past two days (May 3 and 4), more than a dozen local residents have called the local force, telling Mounties they have been contacted by callers claiming to be loved ones in need of help.
This is a commonly-perpetrated scam and Evelyn says, thankfully, more people are becoming wise to it.
“Sadly, this is not the first time Kamloops residents have experienced this kind of fraud,” she said. “Luckily, most people are recognizing the scam attempt for what it is, but even still, we would like to remind residents to exercise caution when answering the phone, texts, or emails requesting money.”
