KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers’ captain has added another award to his trophy case, this time for his efforts off the ice.

In a news release issued Thursday (May 4), the Western Hockey League (WHL) awarded Kamloops local Logan Stankoven with its Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy as the league’s humanitarian of the year.

Stankoven was credited for serving as a prominent ambassador for the Hockey Gives Blood campaign, which engages and educates the hockey community about the importance of blood and stem cell donation. Stankoven spearheaded Hockey Gives Blood Night in Kamloops on March 11 which raised $41,000 in support of Hockey Gives Blood and Canadian Blood Service.

“Over the years, I have had many people go out of their way to help me pursue my dreams in life, so giving back to the community has always been important,” Stankoven states. “To Stu Middleton of Hockey Gives Blood, and the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, thank you for helping me raise money for such great causes. Thank you to the City of Kamloops, Blazers fans, and all those who have donated and supported me through these great initiatives.”

Stankoven is the first Blazer to be named WHL humanitarian of the year.
