T-Birds beat Kamloops Blazers 5 – 1 to take series opener
KENT, WA — The Seattle Thunderbirds struck for three goals in less than six minutes in the third period to blow open a tight game and skate to a 5 – 1 victory over the visiting Kamloops Blazers Saturday (Apr. 29) night. The win gives the T-Birds a 1 – 0 lead in the best-of-seven WHL Western Division Final.
Jared Davidson led the Seattle offence with two goals and one assist while Dylan Guenther, Nico Myatovic and Gracyn Sawchyn added singles. Olen Zellweger scored the lone goal for the Blazers to cut the T-Birds lead to 2 – 1 after the second period.
Seattle outshot Kamloops 35 – 28 and scored once on three powerplay opportunities. The Blazers failed to score on their two powerplay chances.
Game two in the series will be played Sunday afternoon in Seattle. The series shifts to Kamloops for games Tuesday and Thursday.
