BC Wildfire Service urges caution with outdoor burns in Cariboo region ahead of May 4th fire ban

Apr 29, 2023 | 10:48 AM

CARIBOO — The BC Wildfire Service is urging caution to members of the public and industry personnel planning any outdoor burning in the Cariboo Fire Centre due to warmer weather, increased winds, and lower humidity levels.

As a result of these conditions a catagory 3 fire prohibition takes place on May 4, 2023. Prohibiting any fire more than two meters high, and three meters wide.

Over the past 48 hours, 12 wildfires have occurred in the Cariboo Region, with the majority currently under control but some presenting challenges to suppress and contain. Although there are no open burning prohibitions currently in effect, individuals should ensure that they are burning safely and in accordance with regulations.

BC Wildfire Service notes that it is good practice to monitor the weather forecast and check with local governments for any restrictions before lighting any fire.

To prevent fires from getting out of control, the Cariboo Fire Centre suggests taking the following precautions: ensure adequate resources are on hand to control the fire, never burn in windy conditions, create a fireguard around the fire site, never leave a fire unattended, and ensure that the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

Furthermore, burn registration holders are advised to check on winter burn piles to make sure they are fully extinguished ahead of the fire ban

If you spot a wildfire, an unattended campfire, or any open burning violation, please call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.
