PETERS: Every workplace needs a Chad Klassen

Apr 28, 2023 | 11:18 AM

THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY GRIM things to talk about this week.

It’s a second straight week with a scary fire — this one even more devastating than last week’s, as it gutted a house in Upper Sahali.

At the same time, there are both avalanche warnings and high streamflow advisories.

There’s more crime and social disorder, with no sign of improvement.

The future of the biggest natural resource employer in our region is up in the air.

TRU cancelled the Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

Even the local grape harvest is threatened.

It all seems to be so bad. But you don’t need me to tell you it’s bad.

Instead, this week I want to talk about something good.

Today is Chad Klassen’s last day with us here at CFJC. He’s moving on to new challenges after doing about everything he could possibly do at our station.

He’s been a camera operator, an editor, a reporter, an anchor – pretty much everything but sitting at reception.

When he began, he already had that Energizer bunny work ethic that he has never lost, but he was green.

Once his expertise matched his motor, he was on his way.

Not only that, during his 11 years here at CFJC, Chad developed a contact list that can probably only be matched by Raffelina Sirianni.

His easy rapport with sources and contacts in the community has paid off in countless scoops and leads.

Every day of those last 11 years, it has been a pleasure to work alongside Chad.

And while we tease him about his challenges with keeping an ordered workspace and about leaving his breakfast in unexpected newsroom locations, we all have to admit he’s an integral part of our station and we’re really going to miss him.

Most of us would rather spend our days on a tropical beach or beside a lake than going to work — but if we have to go to work, we should all be lucky enough to have friendly, dedicated and talented colleagues.

In other words, every workplace should have a Chad Klassen.
