KAMLOOPS — Every year, April 28 is recognized as a National Day of Mourning. It’s an opportunity to remember and honour workers who have been injured or even killed on the job.

In Canada, over 1,000 people lost their lives on the job in 2021, with 161 of those deaths occurring here in B.C.

The Kamloops and District Labour Council (KDLC) is holding a service at St Andrew’s on the Square in Downtown Kamloops Friday evening, which will pay tribute to those who have been killed or injured while working.

“Every year on April 28, labour organizations in cities across the country take this time to honour those who have lost their lives while working on the job,” KDLC Spokesperson Jim Waldie explains. “Plus, we also pay recognition to the thousands of workers that are injured, in terms of back sprains or broken legs, and all that. It’s just a day to ensure that everyone works safely so that they can come home at the end of the day to their family.”
