KAMLOOPS — The housing crunch for students pursuing higher education at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) will be eased slightly this year, as TRU’s new modular student housing building is expected to open ahead of the fall semester.

The four-story modular building will provide 148 new beds in single and double rooms.

Due to the ongoing pressures for suitable rental accommodation for students, Warren Asuchak, TRU’s executive director of infrastructure, confirmed that the temporary modular housing units already opened on campus will remain in use for the next few years.

There is also hope with COVID-19 easing, more rentals may open in the community.

“We think this will help. We think this will create more opportunity. And I think the important thing is it’s affordable housing because I think that is something that can deter people from coming to Kamloops or finding housing. Maintaining an affordable price, we think that supports more students,” Asuchak says.

The plan for the site of the new modular housing does include the possibility of two additional dorms to be built in the future.

Asuchak states that the university will be monitoring the supply this fall before deciding on future builds.

“The site plan actually show potential for three buildings, so this is phase one of three. We have had some conversations about phase two, but I think for now we will just see how things settle out, the demands. We are going to keep the temporary modulars in place for a while. We have started some very conceptual plans for the phase two,” Asuchak says.
