COLLINS: Too many deaths caused by gun lovers

Apr 21, 2023 | 5:00 AM

I AM GETTING SO SICK AND TIRED of politicians telling us they grieve with the families of those killed in the latest round of senseless violence.

Most of these incidents are in the United States, where every day there seems to be yet another incident. More than 145 cases of “mass violence” have happened in the U.S. since the start of the year.

Most of them are senseless shootings, at schools, shopping centres, or places where the perpetrator used to work. People are gunned down by someone who just randomly opens fire.

I am also tired of hearing statements from those who suggest that “guns don’t kill people, people do.” People who believe that are just idiots. Many of these killers use assault rifles, or semi-automatic handguns, guns that are not designed for anything except mass killing.

And yet while politicians say they are sympathetic and say “there is too much violent crime in our community,” they turn their heads and oppose control of those weapons.

Many of these instances take place in the Southern States, but they are starting to spread elsewhere in the U.S. and into Canada. If we don’t control the production and sale of these weapons, those crimes will increase.

We have made it far too easy to get hold of these weapons. If you want to kill someone, it certainly can be accomplished. But if we can prevent these “spur of the moment” shootings, it will certainly help.

I have many friends who hunt recreationally. I’m not against that. They do everything properly, follow all the rules and maybe get what they have a tag for. It’s not something I care about doing, but so be it. But they don’t go out and shoot a moose or deer with an assault rifle.

The right to bear arms, in whatever country, is becoming more of an “entitlement” than a right, and there is a difference. It’s too bad all these right-wing lawmakers don’t really understand why this right was enshrined in the Constitution in the first place.

If they could see how it has been abused and how many people have lost their lives over its misuse, they might have had second thoughts about putting it in the document.

In Canada, our background is a little different, but we too have had our share of tragedies. Sadly, our efforts at gun control haven’t been any more productive than they have been in the U. S. And the senseless killings keep on happening.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
