National Canadian Film Day has big Kamloops connection

KAMLOOPS — The annual National Canadian Film Day celebrated its 10th year Wednesday (April 19). Canadian films are showcased across the country through free streaming events at select theatres as well as online.

Grab your popcorn as the Kamloops Film Society is hosting two special screenings to commemorate the day. Strange Brew starring and written by Rick Moranis and Documentary Buffy Sainte Marie are both airing at the Paramount Theatre downtown.

Kamloops Film Society Events Coordinator Josh Rose says programs filmed locally bring more people to the theatre.

“I’ve always been a fan of supporting local and organizations like CBC who have made their own programming like Schitts Creek. It’s really just showing how there is a lot of great content that’s made here in Canada. Why wouldn’t I want to support my fellow filmmakers and local artists?”

Many new movies and T.V shows are filming in B.C, in part to the unique landscapes which is providing film makers with a lot to work with. Over the years large scale movies have been filmed right here in Kamloops which made an impact on the city.

“The more films that we get in Kamloops — not only will it help other local filmmakers, we can build our economy,” said Rose. “We can build this local film scene up that we wouldn’t get to, unless we have some of those bigger films. We got the Power Rangers (2017) movie a while back and I think that was just great.”

The Kamloops Film Society uses the Paramount Theatre to showcase more Canadian films as opposed to the big international hits that Cineplex can screen. Rose says they are focused on letting the younger generation experience Canadian culture in film.

“Really just try to say, hey look we have some great local stuff. You can see your own backyard here. Don’t you want to see yourself in the movies?”

Across Canada there are 100 different showcased movies playing in the National Canadian Film Days “All you Can Watch Buffet”. Newer movies like the 2023 thriller “Simulant” starring Simu Liu and older movies like the 1985 Anne of Green Gables will be streamed through a wide variety of platforms.
