The fire broke out at about 2:30 p.m., in a green belt in the area of Seymour Street West. Fanned by gusty winds, the flames quickly spread through the grass and sagebrush, sending a thick plume of smoke into the air.

Jason Brown lives on Strathcona Terrace, above where the fire ignited. He was home to see the flames come within five feet of his back fence.

“We get a lot of really strong winds in that valley there and there’s no telling which direction they’re going to be blowing,” Brown told CFJC‘s Michael Reeve. “Eventually, [the fire] did blow up to the top of the ravine end of our backyard, near the structures.”

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews attacked the fire from various different spots — including Brown’s backyard.

The homeowner was glad to let firefighters drag their hoses from the street into his yard to douse the flames.

“They did a great job,” he said. “They were in the backyard there, pulling the hoses down and spraying. We had maybe five, six hoses blasting the fire down. All the men and women did a fantastic job. I’m really appreciative of it.”

With the flames under control as of late Wednesday afternoon, a fire prevention crew is now investigating the cause.

As of late afternoon, the power remained out to thousands of B.C. Hydro customers in the West End, downtown and North Shore.
