Friday morning fire destroys structure in Cherry Creek

KAMLOOPS — Authorities are looking into a structure fire in Cherry Creek.

The blaze, which broke out around 11:00 a.m., appears to have destroyed a garage structure near Beaton Road and the Trans Canada Highway. The property has been identified online as the Cherry Creek Cricket and Worm Farm.

One caller to CFJC Today reported hearing an explosion before seeing a plume of black smoke rising from the scene.

Fire Information Officer Shaelee Stearns says the B.C. Wildfire Service sent an initial attack crew to the scene.

“Our crews are not trained for structure firefighting at all and we also don’t have the safety equipment for it,” Stearns told CFJC Today. “Our crews only will monitor and make sure it doesn’t spread to the brush and it does spread to the brush, that’s when we would action it.”

Additionally, BC Hydro reports 248 of its customers in the area of the fire have been without power since 11:05 a.m. The estimated time for power to be restored is 5:00 p.m.
