Kamloops strong person competition makes pumped up return

KAMLOOPS — Nearly 50 bodybuilders from across Western Canada came to the Powwow Grounds at Tk’emlúps on Saturday (April 8). Spectators from around the city brought out chairs and braved chilly temperatures to watch the athletes compete for the title of the strongest man or woman.

The event featured both men and women competing in a variety of events, from dumbbells to log lifting and truck pulling. The Powwow Grounds were transformed into a makeshift outdoor gym, as bodybuilders practiced for their upcoming competitive lifts.

The atmosphere was one of comradery more than it was one of competition, with bodybuilders cheering on their fellow competitors. Organizers say that the strongman community, like most gym communities, is tightly knit.

Tyson Delay from Williams Lake was in attendance. Delay holds a world record lift and is the second-best strongman in Canada for his weight class. He believes that the community behind bodybuilding and strongmanship is growing, and hopes that will continue through increased exposure. To Tyson, Saturday’s event, with its large turnout, is a sign that the community has already grown exponentially

2023 marks the event’s grand return. Unlike many annual events, the strongest man and strongest woman competitions were not cancelled due to the pandemic, but instead due to a change in management. The last time the event was hosted was in 2017, when there were only seven participants.
