KAMLOOPS — In an effort to make online transactions safer, the Kamloops RCMP detachment is opening its doors to buyers and sellers.

Starting Friday (April 7), the detachment has established ‘Buy and Sell Exchange Zones’ inside the lobbies of its two headquarters — 560 Battle Street and 915 Seventh Street.

The zones will be open during business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. People taking part in online sales and purchases are encouraged to complete their transactions at those times.

“The goal of this new project is to provide locations where people can choose to complete their online transactions in a safer and monitored environment, in an effort to help reduce theft, robbery, and fraud,” said Constable Justice Lesuk, the officer who has implemented the program. “It’s a simple and straight-forward solution that will hopefully provide buy-and-sell shoppers with more comfort when they get to the actual physical exchange of cash and product.”

Lesuk notes RCMP officers will not assist or monitor the transactions, but are simply offering a safer space where they can take place.

Those who do not wish to utilize these spaces are given these safety tips when taking part in online commerce:

  • Conduct the exchange during the day time
  • Don’t go alone, bring a friend or family member to come with you
  • Go to a public place that has lots of foot traffic
  • Limit the personal information you give out as much as possible
  • On either side of the exchange, inspect the items as well as the money to ensure they’re not fraudulent
  • Utilize this public website to ensure the items being traded are not stolen
