City water system upgrades well underway in Greenstone Park

KAMLOOPS — Contractors for the City of Kamloops are making progress on the upgrades to the water system upgrades at Greenstone Park in Lower Sahali.

Crews continue to excavate the park in preparation to add a 1.3 megalitre reservoir — equivalent to an additional 1.3 million litres — as well as a new pumphouse to the existing infrastructure in the park.

According to the city’s Capital Projects Manager, that will have a two-fold benefit for residents.

“It gives more capacity for development in the area, so there’s more water available for that,” Matt Kachel explains. “Most importantly though, it adds storage capacity for the fire department. If there’s a fire in this zone, they have this stored water to pull from, instead of just relying on the pumps.”

Crews have had to undertake some controlled blasting work in the area, which has caused some disruptions up to this point. Kachel says that work is almost done, and appreciates the resident’s patience with the project.

“We had to blast bedrock to remove that material in order to get the reservoir at the correct elevation,” Kachel says. “We started blasting a couple of weeks ago and it’s slated to be done this week. We’re almost done, then we’ll move on to doing the concrete work for the reservoir.”

The project is one of the most expensive the city has planned for this year, at $13.6 million. The hope is that the park will be back in commission for folks in the neighbourhood by the fall and that the project will be fully complete by November.

“We’re currently slated to be wrapped up by the end of the year. To everyone around, it’ll look like it’s done in September. We’re going to have to work in the booster station, which is going to be built in the [northeast] corner there, which will be commissioning pumps and stuff. But to the outside looker, it’ll be done and we’ll be trying to grow grass by the end of the year.”
