SOUND OFF: Kamloopsians deserve answers on progress of cancer centre
MANY KAMLOOPSIANS WILL REMEMBER that the NDP government of the 1990s promised a cancer centre to serve Kamloops and the Thompson Valleys, then broke that promise and opened one in Kelowna instead.
I can’t help but be concerned they’re going to break this promise once again. After the B.C. Liberals committed during the last B.C. election to enhance cancer treatment at Royal Inland Hospital if elected, John Horgan showed up a few days later to promise that a new cancer centre in Kamloops would be built in four years if the NDP was elected. Three years later, the project is still stuck in concept planning.
What’s even more alarming is the apparent secrecy around it. After three years, we can’t even get the most basic details about the timeline, location, or scope of the project. If Interior Health has truly been working away on the concept plan, there should be nothing to hide and no reason to keep these details away from the community.
In light of the NDP’s previous broken promises on this issue, the people of Kamloops and area want reassurance that there is indeed a clear, timely plan to deliver this vital project. What we’re getting instead are continued delays and a complete lack of transparency.
