SICAMOUS, B.C. — A 55-year-old man from the Kootenays was arrested on two outstanding warrants after a standoff and heavy police presence in the Shuswap Tuesday (March 21).

In a news release, Sicamous RCMP say their frontline officers attempted to arrest the man from Salmo outside his RV in a Malakwa trailer park at around 10:00 a.m. However, police say the man ignored them and barricaded himself inside his trailer.

Nearly five hours later at around 3:00 p.m., police say they deployed tear gas into the RV which led to the man exiting and being sent to the Salmon Arm RCMP detachment.

As negotiations with the man failed, RCMP say they were concerned for the safety of the officers and the public as one of the man’s warrants involved a firearms offence. Sicamous RCMP say they and the Salmon Arm detachment contained the area and ensured no residents were in their trailers during the standoff before other police units arrived.
