KAMLOOPS — A survey of Thompson-Nicola Regional District residents shows majority support for most of the services the district provides — with the exception of transit and the Thompson Nicola Film Commission.

The public feedback survey gathered the opinions of more than 1,200 residents spread throughout the district’s member municipalities and electoral areas.

It asked respondents about their level of support for 16 different TNRD services provided to electoral areas and six provided to municipal residents.

The majority of respondents indicated either support or strong support for 14 of those services — including highs of 91 per cent (electoral areas) and 89 per cent (municipalities) for emergency preparedness, and 89 per cent (electoral areas) and 91 per cent (municipalities) for emergency preparedness.

The TNRD cost-shares transit services for certain electoral areas, but only 46 per cent either support or strongly support it. Thirty-one per cent said they were neither for no against the service, while 11 per cent were either against or strongly against it.

The disconnect is more stark for the Film Commission. Within the TNRD’s electoral areas, only 29 per cent indicated either support or strongly support. Thirteen per cent were either against or strongly against it, while 44 per cent said they were neither for no against.

Totals were similar for the Film Commission within the member municipalities. Twenty-nine per cent either support or strong support it, 42 per cent were neither for nor against the service, while 15 per cent were against or strongly against.

Meantime, while 57 per cent of respondents said their taxes were high in relation to the services they receive, 62 per cent wanted to see service improvements and 59 per cent opposed service cuts.
