Monday marks the spring equinox – and spring-like weather is here to stay: Environment Canada

KAMLOOPS — The spring equinox has officially come and Environment Canada is quite certain we are well into spring weather in Kamloops.

The equinox officially arrived at 2:24 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time Monday (Mar. 20).

Environment Canada, however, measures seasons in meteorological time, meaning spring fully encompasses the months of March, April and May.

Forecaster Derek Lee told CFJC Today he expects normal spring temperatures and precipitation conditions for the next several weeks, meaning daytime highs in the low-teens and overnight lows close to freezing.

“For the remainder of March, we are still looking at a near-normal temperature trend for the Kamloops area,” said Lee. “Heading into April, it’s still looking like things are pretty much near-normal. We may have some cold days here or there, but not every day will be cold and it’s more toward that normal trend.”

“In terms of precipitation, I feel like right now, from what I can see, for all of spring, we’re looking to see a normal precipitation trend. It doesn’t seem like it’s driving anywhere too extreme.”

However, Lee notes it may be a little soon to plant those tomatoes — or to take high mountain driving for granted.

“At least in March, we’re still looking at overnight lows of below freezing, so there will be a risk of frost even for the remainder of March and even into mid-April,” he said. “Once we’re past that mid-April mark, the frost usually goes away because our nighttime temperatures will be well above freezing by then.”

“For many people who live in the higher elevations, you can still see snow. Up in the Coquihalla, the Okanagan Connector, those high-elevation highways are much in that snow period still. Those temperatures up in the highway passes in the higher terrain are still well below freezing — even though the valleys are at 11 degrees or so.”
