SOUND OFF: Supporting B.C.’s growing communities

Mar 15, 2023 | 9:14 AM

BRITISH COLUMBIA IS SEEING A RECORD NUMBER of people moving to our province. There is no doubt that with a beautiful landscape, great job opportunities and strong social supports, people are drawn here. With this growth, though, comes greater demands on our infrastructure, services and amenities. Local governments across the province are doing their best to support their growing communities, but we know that they need help to keep up with the pressure.

That’s why we’re supporting local governments by investing $1 billion across all 188 municipalities and regional districts to help manage expanding populations through our Growing Communities Fund. Thanks to the province’s impressive economic recovery since the pandemic, we’re able to put B.C.’s surplus to good use by investing that money back into people.

Grants through the Growing Communities Fund will be distributed to local governments based on a formula that considers multiple factors to make sure that everyone gets their fair share. This funding is vital as communities across B.C. and the world continue to face challenges due to global inflation.

I know that this grant will have an incredible impact on my home of Langley, one of the fastest growing communities in the province. Kamloops and surrounding areas are growing too! That’s why we’re providing the City of Kamloops with $15,692,000 for important community infrastructure like recreation facilities, parks and water delivery improvements.

This investment means that councils can move forward with important projects that will help support a thriving community for many years to come.

I know local governments are already working extremely hard to support their growing communities, and we want them to know that our government is here for them through this period of growth.

Each community in B.C. is unique, with varying needs and populations, and we know that it’s best for local governments to decide how to use these funds to serve their residents. We are all better off when we work together, and I’m so glad that the Growing Communities Fund will help build healthy, vibrant and resilient communities for people.
