North Shore beautification, firefighters, marquee sign among budget requests okayed by Kamloops council

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council met Tuesday (Mar. 7) to hash out its supplemental budget requests. Multiple items were discussed on the budget, and all of the motions were carried.

A number of beautification projects were approved as part of the budget. A Kamloops marquee sign was approved and will be built. A location had not been yet decided. The most discussed location was Riverside Park.

A general streetscape beautification motion was passed. Calling for trees and flowers to be planted along important streets and boulevards in the city.

A North Shore public realm improvement project was also passed, to develop green spaces and increase the number of garbage bins available.

For infrastructure, on and off ramp upgrades along the Trans Canada Highway were approved, to help stop backlogged vehicles stacking up before they get onto the highway.

Venture Kamloops will be given $50,000 in funding to help assist their data collection efforts.

The Active Transportation Plan will be accelerated, opening up the city to travel by bicycle.

A number of public services have also been improved with the new budget. A request for more community service officers has been granted, as well as a request for more full-time firefighters to address staffing shortages

The City of Kamloops will also be purchasing new vehicles to add to its fleet.

The supplemental budget will contribute 1.85 per cent to a total tax increase of about 6.8 per cent per average household for 2023.
