COLLINS: We don’t need the shovels for the snow

Mar 5, 2023 | 5:30 AM

LAST SATURDAY, the Vancouver Sun had a headline that caught my eye. It said, “Get out the shovels.”

I got really excited but as I read the story, I became less so. Turns out it was just a headline to tell Vancouver residents to get ready for a dump of snow. I thought they were going to tell us to get ready to shovel up a big pile of BS doled up by the NDP.

After announcing yet another expenditure with absolutely no substance, it’s apparent the Premier was again blowing smoke, as he has throughout his 100-day plan. More cancer care centers, more recruiting of oncologists. We can’t recruit nurses, how the hell are we going to recruit oncologists? I’m pretty excited – NOT.

Billions for flood victims and flood control but how will it be run out? How long? How will it blend in with wildfire mitigation? What’s the rollout for better medical care? You can’t run a province or a country with promises. But that’s what David Eby has done so far.

Little consultation with people in civil service. He doesn’t seem to even consult with his own cabinet. How do you develop a plan of action with that nonsense? I thought maybe the budget would provide more clarity. Maybe a little bit but we still don’t know, for example, if Kamloops is going to get its long-promised cancer centre, or if surrounding rural communities will be able to rely on better emergency care.

Lots of spending is proposed but spread out over a long period of time. Far too long a period of time. Much of the spending is simply fulfilling commitments from years ago. And not a lot new. And again, almost all of it was devoted to lower-income British Columbians. Nothing for the middle-income earners, who are always the ones given no reprieve.

You might get the idea I’m not a fan of the NDP. Not quite true. What I want is a government I can trust. Doesn’t matter what its label is. I’ve criticized the Liberals (not the United Party yet because they’re too new). I’ve slammed Social Credit. If they are not accountable, they need to be called out.

I ran for Council in 1974 when I was pretty new to Kamloops. Shared a lot of my advertising and campaign resources with a fellow named Riis. He and I shared a lot of the same views.

I have huge respect for Sadie Hunter. To me, she represents the future of politics. She has a diverse background and so much to offer. Same with people like Barb Nederpel. On the other hand, I would vote in a heartbeat for Elenore Sturko, the Liberal MLA in Surrey. Elenore went to SKSS, and I have followed Elenore’s career as an RCMP member and now an MLA. Peter Milobar and Todd Stone are first class.

So it doesn’t matter the party, I am more interested in the results. Sadly, Premier Eby hasn’t given us much in the way of results so far.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
