BC women’s hockey team wins gold for the first time at 2023 Canada winter games.

BRITISH COLUMBIA — The Canada Winter Games in Summerside, Prince Edward Island are coming to a close. Gold medal games are being hosted to wrap up the event, and the British Columbia women’s hockey team has upset the competition, and taken away their first-ever Gold Medal in the event.

The Sunday game was between team British Columbia, and team Nova Scotia. Goaltender Rebecca Noble shut out all eleven of Nova Scotias’ shots for a final score of 3-0. The three goals were scored in the second half of the game by athletes Mikayla Blomquist, Maddie Leaney, and Danica Maynard.

Chloe Primerano notably assisted two of these goals. Primerano is the first-ever female skater to be drafted to a CHL team. The draft pick of the Vancouver Giants. Primerano led the tournament in both scoring and assists. For a total of 14 points, and 9 assists.

“This has been a long time coming,” said British Columbia head coach Kris Hogg. “It is hard to put this feeling into words. A lot of these girls have been in our program for a long time and have battled hard from day one to put B.C. on the map. What a great job by this group. I’m very proud of them all.” Hogg Continued.

B.C. defeated Quebec Saturday night 6-1 advancing to the final, while Nova Scotia had defeated Ontario 3-2. Both teams made historic runs this year. This marks B.C.’s first-ever gold medal and second medal overall. This also marks Nova Scotia’s first medal. Despite Nova Scotia’s loss, their achievement seemed to bring excitement to the dressing room.

“I think this week truly speaks to the calibre of hockey we have in Nova Scotia,” said Nova Scotia head coach Kori Cheverie. “This group is so special; they played three hard games to get to this point and did everything they could [to win]. We are very proud of the effort of this team.” Cheverie continued.

Quebec and Ontario played for the bronze medal today as well. Resulting in an Ontario 3-1 victory to secure the third place position.
