COLLINS: Scotties a part of Kamloops’ success story

Feb 17, 2023 | 4:53 AM

STARTING TODAY, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts gets underway in Kamloops.

Most of the best female curlers in Canada, if not the world, begin play at the Sandman Centre. Jennifer Jones is here, Kaitlyn Lawes is here, Rachel Homan is here, Tracy Fleury is here, defending champion Kerri Einarson is here, shooting for her fourth straight Canadian title. And so many more. World champions, Canadian champions.

This will be one of the most competitive events in some time, according to the “experts.” Lots of fun and entertainment for the public at the old Kamloops Curling Club. Autograph sessions, the list goes on.

Western Canada Theatre even has a play to celebrate the event. It’s called Hurry Hard and will be a great event to add to the schedule.

These kinds of events don’t come along very often, but when they do, they are a big shot in the arm for our economy. Hotels get booked, shops get busier, restaurants see influxes of visitors and we feel proud to show off our city.

We hold approximately 100 events like this every year, from small events to ones like the Scotties. We get to show off the Tournament Capital, and hopefully entice people back for another visit.

Tourism brings in over $500 million a year to Kamloops. That’s a big chunk of change. We often don’t realize just how much even a short visit brings in.

The only real problem we have is a shortage of workers, which has come about post-pandemic and has forced some locations to reduce their hours. But aside from that, we offer tremendous opportunities. So much to do and explore.

Venture Kamloops says in 2019, 1.3 million people visited the city, spending $303 million and creating a $500 million economic impact. It’s a boost to the city we can’t ignore.

As long as we continue to expand our recreational and cultural facilities and market ourselves well, we will continue to attract these big events.

And don’t forget to show our hospitality. Welcome these visitors and thank them for coming. It will definitely pay off.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
