KAMLOOPS – It’s hard to be an expert on love, but if anybody is, it’s George and Beverly Johnson, a Kamloops couple married 65 years.

Even after all those years together, staff at their retirement home say the love and respect they have for each other is always obvious. But their great love story almost didn’t happen.

When asked if it was love at first sight, Beverly blurted out, “No!”, following it up with a laugh.

The pair met in Prince George, while George was partying a little too hard for Beverly’s tastes.

“Well, they were drinking too much and I wasn’t into that, but eventually he asked me out,” Beverly explained. “I said, ‘That’s fine, but you’ve gotta cut back on that drinking.’”

Apparently, he did. The couple moved to Kamloops, and after 65 years of marriage, two children, two grandkids, six great-grandkids and one great-great-grandchild, the couple is still in love.

That doesn’t mean there haven’t been ups and downs for the two, but putting in the effort is more important than always agreeing.

“In all our lifetime together, we never really had any problems at all that we couldn’t talk over and change it,” George told CFJC News.

The long-time couple attributes their success to patience, love, hard work — and, of course, a good sense of humour.

The couple offered some advice for all the young love birds out there.

“I think you have to be patient and don’t sweat the small stuff, as the kids say,” Beverly said. “And always be ready to give and give some more.”

But none of that matters if you don’t have the right person.

“I think the secret is, we like each other and we enjoy each other’s company,” she said.
